Conventions within media texts and formats are things that audiences expect. The reason most magazines follow standard conventions is because it makes it easier for the reader to understand them. Some magazines are more conventional than others, and some totally break conventions by coming out with some really wacky designs. It's normally the case that more formal magazines are conventional and then the more hip and fashionable ones are less conventional because they want to prove a point about the genre and audience that they are targeting.
My Magazine
My magazine is a fashionable music mag and I decided to make it this genre because it best suits my personality and I think there aren’t any big magazines out there that promise the same things that mine does, there were a few magazines that influenced mine and these were Woofah and Giant because they focused on the same type of music that my magazine did and also had very clean and slick looking covers. I wanted my magazine to look very clean and Woofah especially showed a very clean and tidy front cover and still used the same genre of music as me. Below are a few pictures of these two magazines.

Front Cover
My front cover is quite conventional but not as much as some magazines; it is very clean and has a great use of white space. My masthead is a little unconventional because is aligned on the right hand of the page as opposed to being centred or being on the left as more conventional magazines mastheads are. I used a very bold fond for this to make it stand out and then made it flow a bit more by having the D joined to the U slightly which complimented the use of white space.
The cover lines on my page are displayed in the areas of my image where there is the most negative space free and for where it says “Bobby Green” the text is wrapped around his shoulder because it is the main cover line and I want it to stand out more, it is also in a different colour because it makes it stand out more and the colour I chose is red which contrasts with the colour of his hat in the main image. The other cover lines are aligned to the right edge of the page which is conventional and makes them easy to recognise and read, I didn’t wrap these around his body as well because it would take the novelty of having the main cover line stand out.
Contents
The contents page of my magazine is quite bold with a rounded block where most of my contents is displayed and then the more important pages are kept outside the box so they stand out more. I have added a few Polaroid images which look very pleasant to the eye because they are nice and flowing and look like they have been stacked on top of each other. I have also added some coloured text onto my contents page because this adds a bit more interest and something else too look at, it also divides off certain sections and makes the more important pieces stand out from the normal text.
Bobby Green who is featured on the cover is in quite a conventional position on the cover because he is on one of the sides, apposed to being a cantered shot and only in the top corner of the page. Another conventional way of displaying an image would be straight in the middle of the page. The clothing that he is wearing is realistic to the type of music that he makes and sets the tone for the magazine and shows it to be quite hip and fashionable. There is a strong house style throughout my magazine and that is a good use of negative space and black text with the main points highlighted by a bright colour which is seen in the images below.

The white on all of my pages lets the eyes of the reader focus on the more important points or areas.
Double Page Spread
My double page spread is quite unconventional because it shows a large image on one side of the page which leaks over to the other a little bit, although it is unconventional it works very well because it draws focus onto the music artist as soon as you open the page and have a look. The text on the side is neatly displayed alongside the picture and this all ties together to create quite a pleasing double page spread which still sticks to the main house style.
